Navigating Challenges with Innovation: Al-Maktoum College’s Journey in Dundee

Nestled on Blackness Road in Dundee, Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education has become a symbol of resilience and innovation over its 22 years of operation. Dr AG Abubaker, the head of the College, recently shared insights into the unique challenges and triumphs of running this distinctive further education institution, which continues to make a significant impact both locally and internationally.

Overcoming Adversity with Agility

From its inception on a day marked by global turmoil—September 11, 2001—Al-Maktoum College has faced its share of challenges. These ranged from navigating the complexities of UK visa regulations to distinguishing itself amidst a crackdown on “bogus” colleges. Yet, through each hurdle, the college has not only persevered but has also proven its legitimacy and educational value.

Dr Abubaker highlights the College’s ongoing battle with the constantly shifting visa regulations and the broader impacts of these changes on international students’ decisions to study in the UK. Despite these challenges, the College’s dedication to proving its worth and maintaining ambitious standards has seen it emerge stronger, now recognised as an accredited SQA centre.

A Unique Educational Offering

Al-Maktoum College prides itself on its diverse curriculum, ranging from Islamic finance and Arabic to business management, moral governance, and sustainability. With degrees affiliated with both Abertay and Dundee universities, and a variety of HNC and HND courses accredited by the SQA, the College offers a rich educational tapestry that draws students from across the globe.

Small Size, Far Reach

One of the College’s strengths lies in its small size, which allows for a more personalised educational experience. This intimate setting provides comfort and encourages success, particularly for those who may feel overwhelmed in larger classroom environments. Dr Abubaker notes, “Our students thrive here, in the small groups with a lot of one-to-one tuition.”

Reflecting Dundee to the World

Al-Maktoum College not only focuses on academic excellence but also plays a vital role in promoting Dundee as a welcoming city for learners from around the world. The establishment of the Dundee Centre for Business Excellence two years ago has furthered this mission by facilitating training and business development opportunities that bridge academic learning with practical experience.

Looking to the Future

As the College continues to evolve, it remains ahead of the curve, introducing innovative programs like the UK’s first MSc programme in Strategic Organisational Learning in collaboration with Abertay University, and soon, a postgraduate degree in Customer Experience and Service Excellence. This forward-thinking approach ensures that Al-Maktoum College remains a relevant and influential force in the ever-changing landscape of higher education.

A Testament to Resilience and Innovation

Al-Maktoum College’s journey is a testament to the resilience and innovation required to succeed in the competitive world of higher education. Under Dr Abubaker’s leadership, the College not only navigates challenges with agility but also continuously adapts and grows, reflecting the dynamic spirit of Dundee itself.

As the College prepares to celebrate the accomplishments of its graduates next week, it stands as a beacon of educational excellence and a bridge between diverse cultures and communities.
