March Open Lecture

We are pleased to be hosting an open lecture on the 16th March, 2023 here at Al-Maktoum College.

We will be joined by The Rev’d Canon Dr. William Taylor, BA, M Th., M Phil., Ph.D, FRAS, who will be delivering the open lecture entitled “The Creativity Behind the Wall – Balkan Orthodox Creativity under the Ottomans.”

 

About the Speaker:

The Rev’d Canon Dr. William Taylor, BA, M Th., M Phil., Ph.D, FRAS

Is Chairman of the Anglican and Eastern Churches Association and Vicar of St John Notting Hill. He has worked and lived in Jordan, Cairo, and Turkey, served in parishes in England, as a Chaplain in the Middle East, on the ecumenical staff of the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace, and as Dean of an English Cathedral. He has travelled and lectured extensively throughout the Middle East and Central Asia. A linguist by training and inclination, his languages include Syriac, Arabic, and Turkish. Publications include Light from the East, Christians in the Holy Land ( ed) , Ahl al Dhimmi: A Study of minorities in Islam, Christianity in Iraq, Antioch and Canterbury, and Narratives of Identity- a copy of which was presented to HRH The Price of Wales in 2013- Turkey, Looking Behind and Before (ed. with Murat Siviloglu)), and The Creativity Behind the Wall – a Study of Orthodox Art in Ottoman Albania. He is a Facilitator for the Windsor Leadership Trust, a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society, and a Freeman of the City of London.
William’s Ph. D., from SOAS, is on the dhimmi system of the Orthodox Churches in the late Ottoman Empire. He is an Honorary Ecumenical Canon of the Cathedral of the Holy Child, Manila. In the visual arts, he specialises in iconography, and the relationship of Orthodox art forms to the art of Islam and has a current project in the form of Monks & Monasteries of the Silk Road.
