Open Lecture to Focus on Finance and Religious Links

The current Open Lecture series at Dundee’s Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education continues this month – Thursday, May 14 at 6 p.m –with an examination of how finance and religion are connected.

Professor Philip Goodchild, from the University of Nottingham, will deliver a talk titled, “Theology Of Money” and focus on the Christian approaches to banking and finance.

His lecture will also explore to what extent the contemporary world is built upon an idolatrous foundation.

Professor Goodchild’s research focuses on the intersection of philosophy, credit and faith, as well as the linking of economics and theology.

The author of several books, he is currently working on another titled, “Credit and Faith: Economics and Theology.”

He will suggest that in the modern world, economics and theology are usually treated as entirely separate disciplines: one is concerned with material life, the other with spiritual life.

Such separation does not prevent occasional clashes and Professor Goodchild will explore the nature of contemporary money, the way it is created as debt, and the ways in which it brings economics and theology back together.

Principal and Vice Chancellor at Al-Maktoum College, Dr Hossein Godazgar, said:

“The emphasis of this very interesting lecture will be on the theology implicit within contemporary practices in money, finance and banking.

“It is an intriguing field of study and Professor Goodchild’s expertise will be enlightening and topical.”

This is the second last event in the current programme of Open Lectures that attracts speakers from all over the world.

The lecture is FREE to attend and open to the public. However registration is required due to capacity.
