Contemporary digital tools and how they are transforming Qur’anic studies will be the focus of this month’s Open Lecture at Al-Maktoum College.
Dr Andrew Bannister, Director of Dundee-based Solas Centre for Public Christianity, says these tools are giving scholars a new-found opportunity to analyse the Qur’an’s language, structure, formation and transmission in powerful ways.
He will talk about how new light can be shed on one of the thorniest questions in critical scholarship: how was the Qur’an first composed and how the largely oral environment in which Islam began affected the Arabic text known today.
Dr Bannister, who regularly addresses audiences on issues relating to faith, culture, politics and society, will deliver his lecture – New Tools, Ancient Texts: Computerised Study of the Qur’an – at the College on Thursday, April 19, 2018 with a 6 pm start.
While it is free to attend, and open to the public, registration is required due to capacity.
