Overview


Our Higher National (HNC/D) courses in Business are designed to prepare individuals with the knowledge and fundamental skills to be able to navigate within highly competitive and ever-changing industries.

Students will gain insight into the different factors that influence modern-day businesses as well as the structures and strategies adopted by organisations to develop, grow and succeed.

Successful completion of year 1 (HNC) will allow you to progress onto year 2 (HND). Alternatively, students may choose to apply to university to continue studies at degree level. The College has an agreement in place with Abertay University which allows entry into Year 2 or 3 of selected degree programmes. Students will study individual units such as business accounting, IT, managing people, HRM, economics and marketing to help individuals become experts within in the field.

This course may be suitable for:

  • Those who are, or wish to be, self-employed and require a broad grounding in business

This programme is approved and credit-rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). It is available on a full-time or part-time basis.

HNC in Business is awarded at SCQF level 7

Year 1 (HNC)

Year 2 (HND)

  • Part-time – up to 2 years

Entry requirements


Year 1 (HNC)  

  • 2 Highers or equivalent and National 5 Maths or equivalent
  • Relevant National Qualifications or National Qualification Group Awards at SCQF level 5 or 6
  • Applicants with no formal qualifications are encouraged to apply

 

 

Year 2 (HND)  

  • Successful completion of HNC Business and 2 Highers or equivalent
  • Relevant work experience
  • Applicants with no formal qualifications are encouraged to apply

 

 

English Language requirements

  • GCSE English grade C or new grades 4-9
  • Standard Grade grades 1-3
  • National 5 grades A-C
  • IELTS – 6.0 (Minimum of 5.5 in each part and 6.0 in writing)

  • Develop candidates’ knowledge and skills required for employment in a business environment
  • Enable progression within the SCQF framework
  • Develop study and research skills
  • Develop transferable skills including Core Skills to the levels demanded by employers
  • Enable a sound articulation route to the HND Business and higher education
  • Prepare candidates for progression to further studies

Teaching


Students can choose whether to study Full-time or Part-time (daytime, evening and/or weekends), and will be taught through a mixture of lectures, tutorials, case studies, group work, projects and Virtual Learning Environments. All teaching will take place within the College.

Students will be assessed using continuous assessment and exams throughout the duration of the course.
