Al-Maktoum College, Dundee, Scotland’s only independent higher education institution, is to provide all its new full-time students with their own laptop. Terms and conditions available here.
The College, which offers HNCs and HNDs in business subjects alongside a range of courses on Arabic Language and Islamic Finance, is committed to improving access and widening participation in higher education. The College team has identified that lack of suitable tech can hold some potential students back from going to college and has taken action to remove that barrier.
Head of College Dr Abi Abubaker explained the rationale for the offer:
“At Al-Maktoum College we work hard to ensure that nothing gets in the way of students studying with us. Our HNCs and HNDs are fully funded by the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) so are available free to Scottish students; we offer bursaries to help meet living costs for students in difficult circumstances; and we encourage people with no formal qualifications to apply.
“Recently we’ve seen the challenges school pupils have faced if they don’t have easy access to a computer when studying from home. We don’t want that to be an issue for people studying with us, so we decided to ensure that all our students have equal access to the necessary tech by providing a laptop for all of our new full-time students.
Al-Maktoum College opens for the new term in October, when it plans to operate a blended learning model, involving face to face sessions and digital teaching methods.
